Purchased this external DVD drive as my new HP Pavilion has no disc drive, for the purchase cost I felt it was a bargain, it looks as good as it does in the pictures, it matches the silver finish of my laptop. Plugging it in to the usb is easy and sliding a DVD in to test it also easy but this unit doesn't self install any driver software, so it just shows on the laptop as an external USB disc drive. I'm not overly computer savvy, I know my way around them but I went through 3 media player apps off the Microsoft store before one worked seamlessly, the VLC media player, downloaded from the vlc website has proven to be the best and once selected as the main media player in settings has been faultless to use in conjunction with this external DVD driver. My difficulties initially were trying to tell the DVD player to eject the disc, lots of time and internet research showed no helpful results, a mere accidental tap on the desktop hidden menu button on the start bar at the bottom of the home page, did I find a 'safe to eject disc' button which once clicked did indeed tell the DVD drive to eject the disc. I understand now if not tech savvy then get a new laptop or computer with as much included as possible because trying to add bits afterwards can prove very complicated. The driver itself is a bargain to buy, looks good, feels good and does the job I want it to do....no complaints about the actual product, the install i found challenging and lack of instructions provided when it arrived is some what annoying.Read full review

This is a slot loading drive and looks virtually identical to the genuine Apple drive, it comes with a plastic leather effect zip pouch. The drive works well with my 2017 MacBook which has USB-C through a converter, I've managed to read and burn a couple of disks. However - When plugging the drive in to my USB3 hub it pulls so much power that it disconnects any other device plugged into the hub and will not spin up. Therefore it's only usable when plugged directly into the computer so it gets access to the full power available on the port. That said I'm still keeping the drive for the odd occasion I need it but it's obviously built down to a price and if I were to use an optical drive regularly I'd be returning it for something better made.

I have a mid 2010 Mac mini with SuperDrive, about to be replaced by a new mini that comes without a dvd drive. I bought this to give me a cd/dvd disk facility. It arrived before my new mini so I plugged it in to test it. Nothing happened, no drive showing up on the desktop, no software icon showing, nada. Thinking it was faulty I asked for a refund and was granted one immediately. The next day my new mini arrived and, before boxing it up and sending it back, I plugged in the drive. Two whirrs from the drive and there was the icon on the desktop. Software disk loaded flawlessly and ejected on command. Knowledge gained? The Mac’s SuperDrive with all its attendant software will automatically push any other usb connected drive to the back of the queue, and deny it desktop access. On the new Mac this drive worked perfectly straight after plugging in, no drivers to download, straight plug and play, and it’s silver case matches the Mac perfectly. If you are a Mac user you can buy this with confidence. Refund cancelled, Happy Buyer! Hope this helped.Read full review

For a low-cost CD, it works well on my MacBook Air and is amazing value. Although looking metallic, the case is plastic and not very well finished, with a slightly ragged edge around the CD slot. I was surprised that it was delivered in a polythene envelope only, with no outer box or bubble rack. However, it survived a 1 metre drop from letter box to wooden floor unscathed.

Small and compact but loses nothing due to this. It worked first time after plugging it into my USB socket. Great value. Haven't tried burning a disc yet but that was not the reason for which I purchased it.
