This is a great adaptation of Jane Eyre. It shows a bit more of the story when she was younger and more of Jane's story towards the end as well.

There have been about a half dozen or so versions of this wonderful Charlotte Bronte tale produced on DVD and they all have their unique merits and detracts as should be expected, but this version starring Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke seems ultimately to be the most satisfying. The producers and director of this film are quite successful in capturing and recreating the "feel" of the mid nineteenth century with their overall "diminshed/"hot spot" lighting (bright studio lights simply did not exist in that era. The romantic chemistry between Zelah Clarke and Timothy Dalton is very good. At a later interview, she confessed to having enjoyed the "close" scenes immensely as she found Timothy Dalton quite attractive. Since having seen this DVD movie, I have grown to love this woman's classically beautiful face that richly glows with an enthusiasm for life that I have not ever seen elsewhere (with little if any studio makeup). Although Timothy Dalton would later go on to achieve world-wide notoriety as Ian Flemings "James Bond", this was Zelah Clarke's finest, shining moment, and she is sure to capture your heart as a very bright, diminutive Jane Eyre. Running time right at four hours and each of these hours exquisitely textured with Charlotte Bronte's inimitable romantic style thanks to dramatist Alexander Bacon's deft touch in interpreting the authoress' intent. Enjoy Charlotte Bronte and Zelah Clarke at their best in this warm-hearted BBC version of "Jane Eyre"Read full review
