Likes: Very sharp lens, good from wide open but really great once you stop it down to f/2.8. On a cropped sensor camera, no significant fall-off towards the edges. Better build quality than the Sony 50mm f/1.8. Nice neutral colours. For the £80-100 that these go for on ebay, it's far better than anything close price-wise, and not far off Sony's brilliant f/1.4 Dislikes: Suffers from lens flare a bit, although a filter and the built-in hood help with this. The Sony lens handles chromatic aberration a little better.
Very bright lens, bought it for family portraits for my Sony APS-C camera, so this 50mm is 70mm equivalent. Worth money!

This lens has a number of different generations, ranging from being manufactured solely by Minolta to being manufactured by KonikaMinolta. Each of the generations are likely to perform slightly differently, but the performance will not vary to a massive degree. Certainly what wins with this lens is the fact that it can be had fairly cheaply, which results in a pretty decent prime lens at a cheap cost. Particular ones to look out for are the Maxxum lenses, where the two X's cross each other, as these tend to be of better build quality. If newly getting into photography, then this lens is a great companion, especially on APS-C sensors, as with the crop-factor, the lens turns out to be great for portraiture and still-life. Note, that with the very wide f/1.7 aperture, the depth of focus can be very shallow, and take some getting used to. The main negatives of this lens are that wide open, results can be a little soft, and with the extremely shallow DOF, it can be easy to miss the target. The lens also has a 49mm filter ring, which can be difficult to find filters for, and the incorporated lens hood is pretty useless, however, another can be attached with relative ease.Read full review
great results! which is why you get one, acts well in most light conditions, much better than the zooms i,m used to (the kit lens the camera came with). The only reason i,m not giving it full marks is it doesn't look good on the camera, yes i know you don't get one for its looks but it does look a bit wimpy! I am however having fun using it because it opens up a whole new world - messing about with depth of field, etc. Much better for sports or quick moving subjects particularly when the sun is not blazing - low light. Now all I need is a long distance prime for those distance shots! Divorce is just around the corner!!!
