This lens is obviously built to Canon's highest standard, and thoroughly deserves its 'L' series branding. It is optically excellent, although perhaps not quite as sharp as my 100mm f2.8 L IS USM Macro. The great advantage of the 180mm is of course its extra reach, which is great when chasing skittish subjects. The disadvantage must be its weight, which is in excess of a kilo. That having been said, the built-in tripod mount provides perfect balance with my 50D. I would say that a tripod (or monopod) is virtually essential with this lens. With good lighting, and a steady hand (solid tripod), the results from this optic are outstanding. I suppose I should add that the retail price is just a bit high(~£1300), but good examples can be picked up on the secondhand market for well under a grand.
I initially bought this lens for a Night School studio project. Close ups are terrific, but I have yet to use it outside - on wildlife &c .It is big and heavy, but the build quality is great. Has already delivered the ooh/aah wow response on close up work. One tip - I have also bought a set of Kenko extension tubes and used with a Canon (f1.8) 50mm lens. Check it out - tubes are £140 new - this lens is c£1500 new. Both results look good. One associated tip - if you can afford the L series stuff - get it. This one came with everything too - good lens bag, tripod mount lens cap(s) and hood. Alot of money but a lot of product.
Cannons premiere macro lens does not disappoint, coupled with the ring flash its ideal for insects like bees and small flowers. Yes it’s big, you must use a decent tripod but results are stunning.

Lovely lens, very sharp and easy use. Give you 1:1 without any extra extension tubes. When close up the focus can be a little jittery, especially in low light. You're best off using a good solid tripod [not the cheap Benbo either - it's too weak]. If you're into macro this is great! Also acts as a nice tele lens too.
I was so impressed by this lens I sent it to a youtube lens reviewer and he agreed: 'exceptional' build and image quality. For the patient photographer desiring excellence.
