Rites and Wrongs is a humorous tale about a young girl growing up in the dysfunctional household of her womanising father, a well known rabbi, his sickly wife and their Catholic maid. It follows the family through the many mishaps that befall them, and culminates with the rabbi being cited as co-respondent in a divorce case, an event that impacts on all their lives. Growing up in her parents' dysfunctional home, Deborah Steinberg is four when a pregnant, Peggy is employed as their maid. After giving her baby up for adoption, Peggy makes baby Jake Steinberg into her surrogate child. Rabbi Wilfred Steinberg has a penchant for other women, and his wife Frances lives in constant fear of his congregation finding out, and the family's subsequent ruination. The story proceeds to the children's teenage years. Whilst growing up, Jake worries he might be gay, so un-beknown to his parents, his siblings pay for him to go to Amsterdam to lose his virginity. Before university, Daniel the eldest goes travelling, and during this time Deborah is trying to decide between her unsuitable, Christian boyfriend Ian, and Gordan, the son of wealthy jewellers who are members of her father's congregation. Meanwhile Daniel meets Mdinga in Swaziland, and marries her in a traditional ceremony. Wilfred is horrified, and his lawyer suggests paying for the bride's return passage home, and recompensing her dowry.Daniel is heartbroken when she accepts. Gordon is taken ill having Shabbat lunch at the Steinberg's, and cannot be moved. Whilst recuperating, he proposes to Deborah, and because she is desperate to get away from her parents home, she accepts. Wilfred is heavily in debt after borrowing money to send Mdinga home, and is struggling to pay for the engagement party his wife has planned for Deborah. However, he insists on sending Daniel to Israel to make something of himself. While working on a kibbutz, Daniel accidentally shoots himself in the foot, but rather than acknowledge his stupidity, he fabricates a story that an Arab sniper shot him. Recovering in hospital, Daniel meets Miriam a nurse, and returns home with her in tow. But behind his back, Miriam starts an affair with his Christian school friend Peter. This time Daniel is more heartbroken about losing his friend than Miriam, who subsequently leaves them both. Deborah breaks off her engagement, and her mother goes into a decline because of the shame. Gordon is so furious that he poaches Peggy away from them for his cousin in America who is looking for a housekeeper. When Peggy, the linchpin of the family leaves, they go into free fall. The bank is pressing for repayment, and when things couldn't get any worse, a kosher butcher cites Wilfred in a divorce petition. Jake emerges as the hero who saves his father's reputation by his rhetoric and cunning. During an exam at college, Deborah suffers a burst appendix and is rushed to hospital. There she meets Ben, the doctor who operates on her, and after a whirlwind courtship they marry. Whilst on their honeymoon, she learns that Wilfred has suffered a fatal heart attack. The story ends with the re-emergence of Peggy Purnell.
