This was the first Doc Martin Christmas Special, although it was obviously filmed during the height of summer! Despite that, the extra-long 90-minute episode is typically full of dry wit from Clunes as the forthright doctor. This story sees the appearance of Louisa's roguish father Terry(Kenneth Cranham), who already had a bad reputation - and, despite his daughter asking that he be given another chance, that reputation was well justified when he continues his dodgy career when he arrives with a highly-strung Irish friend and, with a gun being waved about, both the Doc and Louisa end up being tied up in the surgery. The usually sleepy Portwenn is then flooded with birdwatchers when they attempt to spot the local rare birds(chough's). but despite Bert Large's attempts to profit from this, it all ends in disaster! There is certainly plenty going on here and the episode is still worth watching despite its longer run time.Read full review

Bought the DVD because my husband enjoyed all the series on the television, and this is the fourth one in his collection now. Martin Clunes demeanor and sense of humour is so different and funny. There is nothing to dislike except I thought I was buying a film and not one of the old tv series episodes. I wouldn`t buy another to replace this one but would buy and look forward to the newer dvd`s as they become available.
Docs usual escapades...but with a lovely scenic set (Cornwall) to play with....just what the doc ordered for this time of year..
