I got a real bargain when I bought this on ebay, although my First impressions of this lens was somewhat underwhelming. The build seems a bit plasticky and the zoom ring felt a bit rough compared to my other lenses. However, my opinion changed completely when I put it to work. The images are superbly sharp with great contrast. When switched to macro I was amazed at just how close you could get - not as close as a dedicated macro but extremely usable. The extra range offered by the 24 and 85 extremes of the lens prove to be a useful bonus over the more standard 28-70mm range of this class of lens. Over all, a bit of an ugly duckling but one that has plenty to surprise and delight. If you're in the market for a good, reasonably priced mid-range FX lens then I recommend you look for one of these and snap up a bargain.Read full review

My favourite lens. Very sharp, even in low light situations. One of the best.

Excellent walk around lens, a.k.a the Swiss army knife of lenses :-) good macro 1:2 feature @ 85mm, but not as good as a micro nikkor, VERY FAST autofocus, the AF scale is about 1/12 of the lens circumference so there is very little movement when it focuses, internal focusing, excellent sharpness when you stop down a bit f/4 to f/8, good for low light too, f/2.8 @ 24mm only, 72mm filter size, full frame! works with film cameras, DSLRs and it will also work with the latest FX DSLR's, future proof!
I bought this lens for my use with my Nikon D300 in low light and high speed situations - for which it works beautifully, even without a VR function. It also excells at macro with the finest ultra-close-ups of flowers, insects and products that I've hoped to capture. The only reason I've marked it at 4 stars (4.9 really) is that there's no manual-automatic focus switching and I would prefer to sometimes be able to quickly transfer into manual.
