Great all round zoom lens. Ideal for general photography inc wedding and portrait work. Zoom motor on this model is pre HSM so a bit noisy but will forgive it!
The images are sharp across the full range of apertures and the quality of the colour reproduction is excellent. The large F2.8 aperture throughout the full zoom range is a huge plus for this lens. The autofocus is certainly fast enough for me and the construction of the lens is to a high standard. The added bonus of the included lens hood and case make this lens an attractive purchase. I am very pleased with the lens.
I bought this lens as a upgrade replacing my 18-55mm kit lens. I found myself realy enjoying from the benefits of a constant large aperture, where it made it possible for me to shoot indoor handholding my camara. The picture quality is very good and is pretty much the same compare to Tamron 17-5omm (A16), and is a bit better than Tokina 16-50mm. The macro function of the lens is very good too. With a min focal length of 20cm, you could virtually shoot any thing as close as 2 cm in front of the lens hood without problem. To conclude, if you are looking forward to buy a large aperture standrd zoom length for your APS-C DSLR, you are mainly looking at 4 options: 1. Sigma 18-50mm EX DC macro 2. Tamron 17-50mm (A16) 3. Tokina 16-50mm 4. Canon 17-50mm IS USM Compare to Tamron 17-50mm They are of similar picture quality and lens build, but Sigma offers macro funciton , Tamron doesnt. Compare to Tokina 16-50mm Tokina is more heavy and bulky, and does not offer PQ as good as Sigma. Compare to Canon 17-55mm IS USM Certainly Canon offers best PQ, the IS and USM function are also unique among 4. But it is very pricy. It actually doubled the price of the Sigma and Tamron lens. It might be a wiser option to use the spare money to get another lens, in stead of get paying double for the IS function.Read full review
As Usual, I was not disappointed with the quality of Sigma lenses. This lens does not have the new HSM high speed focus motor in, but is more than adequate for my wedding photography. The main advantage with this lens is the wide aperture which gives you the ability to get better shots in low light or shallow depth of field as you prefer. This lens is so light I hardly noticed, I had it on, and along with the added advantage of very close macro focusing makes it a superb buy.
Decided to buy this lens as a replacement for my canon 17-40mm L lens which cost £400 on ebay was not expecting much from this as it was a lot cheaper but wow was i suprised i take mostly landscape shots and shoot mainly at f16 aperture on a tripod using a remote release and the image quality is great super sharp and the build quality is very good. The sigma EX range are some of the best Lenses made by sigma and you are assured of the very best in lens technology. All in all a very good lens for the money check the reviews on the internet or try searching for pictures on photograph sites such as flickr.
